The island of Kadavu is situated approximately 90 kilometers south of the main island of Viti Levu and is Fiji's fourth largest. The island is 410 square kilometers in size, approximately 50 kilometers in length and width varies from a few hundred meters to 10 kilometers. The island is one of the most rugged areas of Fiji with a number of high mountains and few roads. The main way to get around Kadavu is by boat and small ferries. The Kadavu group also includes Ono Island, off the eastern tip of Kadavu, as well as a number of smaller islands.
The main attractions of Kadavu is its natural beauty and rugged landscape and so it is often considered an eco-tourist destination. The Kadavu region offers activities such as sea-kayaking, sport and game fishing, surfing (especially on the western end), bird-watching, trekking and Fiji cultural village trips. It is, however, particularly famous as a scuba diving destination, due to its proximity to the world-renowned Great Astrolabe Reef off the eastern end of Kadavu. The reef is one of Fiji's largest, stretching northwards about half the distance to Suva. The world-class reefs makes Kadavu very popular with divers and snorkellers alike.
Due to the lack of roads in Kadavu most resorts provide boat transfer for travelers, collecting them from the Vunisea airport around the coast to their paradise destination. Because of this isolation the resorts are perfect for tourists looking for an uncommercialised getaway, with a chance to experience the 'real Fiji' and some exciting adventure activities or just to relax. It is also, of course, a peaceful and beautiful place for a Fiji honeymoon or wedding.

Matava Surfing
The Great Astrolabe Reef, long regarded as a world-class scuba diving destination, also provides perfect uncrowded and hassle-free surfing. There are three passages (breaks in the reef) that produce long barreling waves anywhere from 2-12 feet. Each passage offers varied conditions that will suit all styles, levels and egos. Intermediate to advanced surfing skills are required. The reef breaks are dangerous and only work in certain weather conditions. The Fiji trades (July - October) can blow out the waves for days at a time. The surf is more reliable in the Summer months.

Matava Dive Sites
NAIQORO PASSAGE: Home to "Spot X" and the "Japanese Gardens". This passage offers one of the finest dives in Fiji, abounding in pelagic fish including schools of sharks, wrasse and barracuda, and coral gardens exploding with colour. The passage is a marine reserve. NACOMOTO PASSAGE: This passage includes "Eagle Rock" and "Cabbage Patch". Eagle Rock is named after a school of eagle rays, which fly around the bommie at the mouth of this passage. The dive also typically hosts reef sharks, barracuda and turtles. Cabbage Patch is home to one of the biggest cabbage coral patches a diver is ever likely to see. Reef sharks, hump head wrasse and colourful schools of reef fish are commonly seen on this relaxing dive. The passage is a marine reserve. SOSO PASSAGE: Home to "Golden Chimney" and "Coral Wonderland". The Golden Chimney is a large coral structure completely covered in golden soft corals, which when blooming light up the entire area. Gorgonian fans, moray eels, reef sharks, garden eels are other highlights of this dive. Coral Wonderland combines the best of wall, drift and relaxed coral watching. The dive starts deep with some very large fan corals on the edge of a very deep drop off. At the end of the wall, large schools of barracuda often hang out along with a grey reef shark or two. The last part of the dive is spent in shallower coral gardens which go on and on with reef fish schooling in large numbers. MANTA REEF: A very special dive and one of the few places in the world where manta rays can be seen regularly. You’ll be taken by the size and graze of these beautiful creatures as they circle inquisitively. Though almost within touching distance all you’ll do is stand back in awe. Even without these magnificent creatures, the reef itself is outstanding in its quality and diversity of fish life. If you see mantas as well, this dive will always rank amongst the best you will ever do.
Matava Fishing
’DEEP V Marine’ BW310 - ’BITE ME’ - flybridge big game boat is one of Fiji’s premiere game boats. It will have up to 4 guests fishing the outside barrier reef and continental drop within 10 minutes. Alternatively guests can cruise the area’s uninhabited islands and sheltered coral lagoons. The boat is outfitted with toilet, shower, galley, fridge, saloon and teak cockpit for guests comfort. Technical equipment includes Simrad sounder/plotter/radar with autopilot, Reelax outriggers and 80lb game chair. A safety briefing is given to all guests prior to departure. Superb blue water game fishing awaits you at the Great Astrolabe Reef and nearby continental shelf drop off. Anglers who want to spend an exciting few hours or those sport fishing for the first time can do so by trying their hand at catching walu, barracuda, trevally or mahimahi and maybe catch one for the Barbecue that night. The keen billfish angler or those eager to experience big game fishing can step up the tackle and head off for the chance of marlin, sailfish or tuna and the best stand up and fight experience they are likely to have. We do not take billfish trophies - the policy is catch, take the picture and release to fight another day. BITE ME currently hold 3 Fiji national records and the crew specialises in ight tackle switch and bait techniques for Sailfish and Kadavu’s famous ’monster’ Wahoo.
